Homeowners 'must inform insurer over major renovations'

Homeowners in the UK must inform their insurer if they plan to make major renovations to their property, according to Sainsbury's Finance.

Neil Laird, the company's home insurance manager, made the comment after research by Zurich recently found that 47 per cent of people do not tell their provider when they are planning to undertake major DIY projects.

He went on to explain that by not talking to their insurer, people could either be left underinsured or actually invalidate their cover entirely.

"Minor DIY projects such as changing doors and decorating rooms do not require people to inform their insurer, but if people intend to make structural changes to their property they need to ensure they inform their insurer first," he added.

Recent research by Halifax Home Insurance found that over seven million households in UK are living in a property featuring unfinished DIY work.

The same study also found that 1.7 million homes have featured the unfinished renovation projects for more than two years.ADNFCR-1054-ID-18624908-ADNFCR
